The Toledo Rockets and Michigan State Spartans both have first-year head coaches on the sidelines tonight when they meet at 8 p.m. ET in Week 1 at Spartan Stadium in Lansing, Michigan.
Despite an awful 2025 season, the Big Ten's Spartans are a -9.5 favorite over the MAC's Rockets. That said, I'm laying the lumber in my Toledo vs. Michigan State predictions since I have more faith in MSU's new head coach, Pat Fitzgerald, getting his guys ready for Week 1.

Toledo vs Michigan State prediction: Michigan State -9.5
It's tough to project what we'll see from these teams in Week 1. But Fitzgerald turned Northwestern into a respectable program in his 17 seasons there from 2006-22, going 110-101 and 5-5 in bowl games, while this is Toledo Rockets first-year head coach Mike Jacobs’ first Division I job.
More importantly, the Michigan State Spartans have more recruiting power and NIL money. In fact, the Power 4 programs usually poach the best players from the Group of Six conferences and FCS schools.
With that in mind, MSU has 12 starters returning from an FBS program this season, and Toledo has six. The Spartans have pretty much the same amount of “portal starts” returning this year, and the Rockets have lost 44 “portal starts” and added just five.
Granted, Michigan State has become the laughingstock of the Big Ten. However, in this period of college football, where good players from smaller schools bail for more money at the bigger programs, the Spartans must have more talent than the Rockets.
Finally, since the Big Ten is the toughest conference in the sport — the last three national champions have been three different Big Ten schools — Michigan State and its first-year head coach will be looking to thump easier competition in front of its home fans.

Toledo vs Michigan State same-game parlay (SGP)
I'm going off muscle memory, but Fitzgerald was a linebacker at Northwestern from 1993-96, and his teams play smash-mouth football. Or at least he did at Northwestern. And, typically, coaches with a defensive background have less aerial teams who prefer to establish the run.
Furthermore, the Wildcats had a 13-34-1 Over/Under record vs. non-conference teams as a favorite of -7 or greater with a -5.0 margin on the total. They are averaging roughly 46 carries for 216.2 yards in those games.
I don't bet based on trends unless I can make sense of them. Yet, in this case, Northwestern liked to ground-and-pound inferior competition and take the air out of the ball.
